A Mike Davis Double Feature

Sex Galaxy and Pervert! will have their Las Vegas premieres at grindhouse event

APRIL 6, 2010 —  To celebrate the DVD release of Mike Davis’ directorial debut Sex Galaxy, PollyGrind.com and The Sci-Fi Center are putting together a special grindhouse double feature in his honor April 10 in Las Vegas.

Sex Galaxy, released April 6 by Breaking Glass Pictures and Unearthed Films, will kick the night off at 7:30 p.m. A question and answer session with Davis will follow. A screening of Pervert!, which Davis wrote and co-produced, will follow that.

“This will be the local premiere for both movies,” Davis said. “I’m excited. Pervert! has never screened in Vegas.”

Sex Galaxy is an award-winning sci-fi-sex-comedy that was made out of public domain footage. Davis wrote, produced and directed the tale set one hundred years in the future. In the 2010 Polished Apple winner, sex has been declared illegal on Earth due to overpopulation and the effects of global warming. So when a crew of astronauts hear of a distant planet inhabited by insatiable female creatures who exist only to satisfy the desires of men, a detour from their routine mission is taken.

Sex Galaxy has been screening at film festivals for enthusiastic audiences around the world for the past year and a half and I'm thrilled for it to finally be available on DVD,” Davis said. “Everyone has been so supportive of my 'green movie' technique and the goal is to continue making wild and entertaining flicks out of old recycled footage. This one was the experiment, and now that I know it works I'm confident they will keep getting better as we go.”

Pervert, which Davis wrote and co-produced, is a horror-sex-comedy that stars porn star and former California governor candidate Mary Carey.  Directed by Jonathan Yudis (who also produced it and Sex Galaxy), the cult masterpiece was heavily inspired by the works of Russ Meyer, Herschell Gordon Lewis and Roger Corman. The 2007 Polished Apple winner is also said to have the most outrageous “monster” to ever be captured on film.

The double feature, which costs a mere $7, is the second in a series of events at the Sci-Fi Center under the “PollyGrind Presents” banner. PollyGrind, short for the Polly Staffle Grindhouse Fest, is a four-day event that will take place in May. PollyGrind creator Chad Clinton Freeman says he hopes to hold similar screenings year round.

“Like the festival I’m doing, these screenings aren’t just about watching movies.” Freeman said. “These are great networking events for filmmakers, actors, models, etc., etc. The Sci-Fi Center offers a very intimate setting for the audience to not only hear from and learn from the makers of the films, but also a chance to meet these creative people.”

Located at the northwest corner of the Commercial Center (right off Sahara on 2520 State Street, Las Vegas, NV 89109), the Sci-Fi Center is a comic book and film geek’s paradise. Owned by William Powell, the store houses a true grindhouse movie theater dubbed The Underground Screening Room that seats 50 and showcases cinema not usually available at traditional theaters in Vegas.

“I'm honored that Chad has invited me to participate in this rather unruly retrospective,” Davis said. “My films were made to be screened at a venue like this. I can't think of a better audience to watch them with than the science fiction buffs, cult movie fanatics and sex crazed perverts of Sin City who are likely to show up.”

An Evening With Rachel Grubb in Las Vegas

Scream Queen's award-winning directorial debut Why Am I In A Box? will highlight grindhouse event

MARCH 2, 2010 —  Rachel Grubb is a pin-up model that's been compared to Bettie Page. She's a Scream Queen with more than 30 films under her belt. She's also an award-winning producer, writer and director. And for one night on March 26 in Las Vegas, genre fans can get up close and personal with her for $5 as PollyGrind.com presents a grindhouse event honoring Grubb.

The event at the Sci-Fi Center will kickoff at 8 p.m. with a batch of trailers, followed by the Las Vegas premiere of the Minnesotan beauty's award-winning directorial debut Why Am I In A Box?. There will also possibly be other footage shown, such as sneak preview clips of upcoming projects.

Grubb, along with actress and model Lisa Pechmiller, will be on hand after the cinema fun for a Q&A, meet and greet and autograph session. There will also be collectables such as poker chips, trading Terror Cards, as well as DVDs and photos for sale at the event.

"This should be a lot of fun," said Grubb, co-founder of the female film company Silent-But-Deadly Productions. "I always have fun in Sin City and I'm hoping my return this year will be my best time there ever."

PollyGrind creator Chad Clinton Freeman describes Why Am I In A Box? as "an edgy arthouse comedy."" He adds that Grubb is "one of the busiest people in the film game" and calls her "one of genre's biggest and brightest up and coming stars."

"She is so talented," Freeman said. "She's only been around a few short years and has accomplished a lot already, but I think we can expect bigger and better from her in the future."

Grubb has been featured in the indie horror films Terror Overload, Tales of the Dead, 13 Hours in a Warehouse, Bad Girls Burn in Hell, Strip Club Slasher, Camp Kill and Cave Women on Mars, to name a few. In 2009 alone, she appeared in 13 different projects. Just this week Why Am I In A Box? won six Creative Spirit Awards, including golds for low budget feature, original comedy, originality and film feature. Not bad for somebody who a very short time ago considered herself "just a writer."

Shortly after graduating with an English degree from the College of St. Catherine, Grubb won the Best Breakthrough Screenplay award at the New York International Independent Film And Video Festival with her first feature script.

"I remember being at a screening at the film festival," Grubb told PollyStaffle.com in 2008. "This guy next to me asked if I was an actress, and I wished then that I could have said yes. I still never thought I could be an actress, but a few years later, I started taking acting classes. Once I was confident enough, I started auditioning for local films, and everything just took off from there."

Freeman says the "Evening with Rachel Grubb" will be the first in a series of events at the Sci-Fi Center under the "PollyGrind Presents" banner. PollyGrind, short for the Polly Staffle Grindhouse Film Festival, is a four-day event that will take place in May.
